Abstract

This study is entitled A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING PROCEDURE TEXT OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK ADISUCIPTO KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2017/2018. This study aims to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK Adisucipto Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 able to write a procedure text? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Adisucipto Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in writing a procedure text? The objectives of this study are (1) To know whether the eighth grade students of SMPK Adisucipto Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 are able to write procedure text or not. (2) To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Adisucipto Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in writing a procedure text. The writer chose VIII A class consisting of 22 students to become the subject of this study. The instrument used for the research was writing test. The writer asked the students to write procedure text by choosing one of the prepared topics. The topics are How to Make a Cup of Coffee and How to Make Fried Noodles. Based on the analysis the writer can conclude that: (1) The eighth grade students of SMPK Adisucipto Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 are able to write procedure text. (2) The ability level of eighth grade students of SMPK Adisucipto Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in writing Procedure text is ”good”. Besides, the writer found that there is only 1 student who gets the highest score 30 (excellent). There is no student who gets score 25–29 (very good) and there are 11 students (59.1%) who get score 20–24 (good) and there are 9 student who gets score 15-19 (average) and also 1 student who get 10–14 (below average) and there is no student gets 5–9 (bad) score. Therefore the writer suggests (1) The teacher should give more explanations to the students about the generic structure and the use of Grammar. (2) The teacher should give more attention to students about the mechanics aspect especially in writing a procedure text. (3) The students should focus on the teacher’s explanation so they cannot do the same mistakes again.
