Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1. Are the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Tunas Harapan Kota Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 able to write recount text correctly? 2. What is the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Tunas Harapan Kota Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in writing a recount text? 3.What is the difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Tunas Harapan Kota Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in writing a recount text? Where as the objective of the study are as follows: 1) To find out whether or not the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Tunas Harapan Kota Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 are able to write a recount text correctly. 2) To know the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Tunas Harapan Kota Kupang in the school year 2016/ 2017 in writing a recount text. 3) To know the difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Tunas Harapan Kota Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in writing a recount text. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to explain a situation which is observed while this research is done. The study was conducted at SMA Swasta Tunas Harapan Kota Kupang in the school year 2016/2017. The subjects of the study was 12 students of the eleventh grade specially class XI IPA. The collected data were analyzed on three aspects of writing, they are grammar, vocabulary and form. The result of this study shows that (1) The eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Tunas Harapan Kota Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 are able to write a recount text. (2) The level of students’ ability is classified as “average” (11) based on standard of measurement proposed by John Anderson. (3) The difficulties faced by the students were on grammar especially the use of noun as modifier, the use of lingking verb to be, the use of passive construction, and to be followed by full verb (I’m play), word order and vocabulary. These scores were given by using analytic method offered by John Anderson. Beside the result of the analysis indicated there was no student who got the high score 18 (excellent) and 15-17 (Very good), there were 6 students (50%) who got score 12-13 (good), 3 students (25%) who got score 9-11 (average), and 3 students (25%) who got score 6-8 (below average) and there was also no student who got score 3-5 (bad). Therefore the writer suggests the English teacher of SMA Swasta Tunas Harapan Kota Kupang to give more attention on the teaching of grammar especially simple past tense, preposition, article and the use of pronoun and give explanation to the students about the generic structure in writing recount text.
