Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Naikoten Kupang able to write a descriptive text based on the video media? 2) What is the level of writing ability of descriptive text of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang based on the video? 3) What are the areas of difficulties mostly faced by the Eighth grade students of SMPK St.Yoseph Naikoten Kupang? Whereas the objectives of the study are as follows:1) To find out whether or not the eighth grade students of SMPK St.Yoseph Kupang in academic year 2017/2018 able to write descriptive tex based on the video as media. 2) To find out the student’s ability in writing descriptive text based on the video of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang. 3) To know the area of difficulties in writing a descriptive text based on the video of SMPK St. Yoseph Naikoten Kupang. The method in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to explain a situation which is observed while this research is done. The study was conducted at SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang . The subjects of the study were 18 students of the eighth grade stdents, especially class VIII A. The collected data were analyzed on three aspects of writing, they are grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. The result of this study shows that (1) the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang are able to write a descriptive text. (2) the level of students’ ability was classified as “ Above Average” (12.43) based on the above average level. (3) the problem faced by the students were on grammar especially the used of simple present tense, pronoun,article, the use of linking verb to be, and to be followed by full verb (she smart), word order and on mechanics especially the used of capital letter, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary . These scores were given by using analytic method by John Anderson. Beside of the result of the analysis indicated that there were 2 students (12%) who got the high score 16-18 (excellent), there were 5 students (27%) who got 13-15 (Very good), there were 11 students (61%) who got 10-12(Above average),there was no student (0%) who got 7-9 (Average), there was no student (0%) who got 4-6 (Below average), and also there was no student (0%) who got 0-3 (Bad). Therefore, the writer suggests the English teacher SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang should give more attention on the teaching of grammar especially simple present tense, article, the use of linking verb to be the use of pronoun, teaching of mechanics especially using punctuation, spelling, capital letter and on vocabulary especially noun, adjective. While the students should pay attention on the learning of grammar especially simple present tense, preposition, article, the use of pronoun and vocabulary, mechanics especially using punctuation, spelling, capital letter.
