Abstract

The study is entitled “The Metaphor of The Traditional Expression in Bajawa Language as the Message from Parents to Their Children”. This research was conducted with the aim of examining, what are the kinds of metaphors encoded in the traditional expression in Bajawa Language used as the message from parents to their children? What are the functions of metaphors do the expressions belong to? What is the dominant kind of metaphors encodéd in the traditional expression in Bajawa Language used as the message from parents to their children? This research using qualitative research methods whose data presented déscriptively. Sample data obtained from primary data and secondary data. Primary data obtained from free interviews between informants and researcher and secondary data obtained from previous studies. The instruments used by the writer in this study were a list of questions, cell phones, pens and notebooks. Data were analyzed by type, function and meaning. The data were analyzed using Structural Metaphor theory by Lakoff and Johnson (2003). The results of the study found that 1. The dominant type of metaphor in this traditional expression is ontological metaphor, 2. The researcher déscribes two functions in the expression, namely spiritual functions and social functions.
