Abstract
A novel was built up of two aspects, they are intrinsic and extrinsic elements. The extrinsic elements are the elements which come from the novel, like history, social, culture and religion. While the intrinsic elements are the elements that construct the novel itself. They are Theme, plot, setting, character, point of few and figurative language. In this thesis, the writer try to analyze the intrinsic elements of a novel in the novel entitled “The lord of The Rings; Fellowship of the ring” by J. R. R. Tolkien. The intrinsic element that the writer analyzes in the novel are just focusing on the figurative language especially metaphor and symbolism. Those elements defined firstly are based on relevant sources. After analyzing the intrinsic elements of the novel, the writer obtained several results. First, metaphor the writer make two categories of metaphor, they are metaphor used to give expression of feeling and ideas and metaphor used to give advice. Second, Symbolism, the writer found 2 symbols in this novel. They are the rings of power, and the mirror of Galadriel.
