Abstract

This study is entitled “THE USE OF NATURAL APPROACH IN INCREASING READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP BINA MANDIRI MALAKA IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. This study was held to find the answer of question, namely: (1) Is the natural approach effective in increasing reading comprehension ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Bina Mandiri Malaka in the school year 2014/2015? (2) To which degree is the effectiveness in natural approach in increasing reading comprehension ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Bina Mandiri Malaka in the school year 2014/2015?. This study is focused on the use of natural approach in increasing reading comprehension ability.The is the eighth grade students of SMP Bina Mandiri Malaka in the school year 2014/2015. The writer chose class A which consist of 30 students. This action research was conducted just in one cycle. Which consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting the action. In collecting the data, the researcher used quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were taken from the Reading comprehension ability tests. The quantitative analysis that was used to analyze the students‟ achievement before and after the cycle was implemented by using descriptive statistics, finding out the mean of the scores in the test and the improvement of the scores. The methods used in this study were quantitative data (comprehension test) and qualitative data (Observation sheet). The research of the study shows that using the use of natural approach in increasing reading comprehension ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Bina Mandiri Malaka in the school year 2014/2015 is effective. It is indicated by (84.16>70.83). Meanwhile, the qualitative data were taken from the observation sheet which were done helping by a collaborator when teaching learning process is done. The research findings are described in line with the problem statements as follows: first, by using natural approach in increasing the students‟ reading comprehension ability mastery improves. It means natural approach is effective. This is proved by the significant increase of the mean score of the posttest. Second by implementing natural approach in reading comprehension ability, the students‟ behavior in learning reading changes and improves their motivation as well. Moreover, they are actively involved and the class situation becomes lively and also increases the students‟ participation in Engish class. In the teaching and learning process the students have interest and self-awareness. The degrees reached are classified as good.
