Abstract

This study is entitled The Study on WH Questions of Laura Language. It is intended to uncover the types, syntactic patterns and the function of WH Questions in Laura Language. The result of this study is useful for both the academic world and the practical life of the society, especially the native speakers of Laura Language. To inspire the study, a number of previous related studies were reviewed. To easily understand, direct, and limit the discussion of this study, a number of basic concepts were defined. To analyse the data, the theory of syntax was applied.The study was conducted in Payola Umbu village, Laura Sub-District of South West Sumba Regency. It is a descriptive study. The data were obtained through elicitation, interview, and note taking. For this reason, a number of questionnaires were prepared in a written form. The data obtained were analyzed through steps of selection, listing, translation, and interpretation of the formal linguistics meaning. The result of the data analysis shows that there are some types and syntactic patterns of WH-Questions in Laura Language. The types of WHQuestions in Laura Language are: Appa „What‟, Ge/Ge pongngu „Which‟,Gi„ Where‟, Gharra/Gharrai „Who‟, Pirra „When‟, Gharra „Whose‟, Peina/Ne „Why‟, Pei pata/Peina „How‟, Gharra barra/Ka gharra barra „to Whom‟. The most syntactic patterns happens on the WH-Questions Appa „what‟ which has five syntactic patterns. They are: „Appa pateki na?‟, „Appa we pateki na‟, „Appa ko pateki na?‟, „Appa pa pateki na?‟, and „Appa ko we pateki na?‟. While the rest consist of three and two syntactic patterns. As a summary of what has been explained, the following data is presented:„What‟ Appa consist of 5 syntactic patterns: Appa pateki na?, Appa we pateki na?, Appa ko pateki na?, Appa pa pateki na?, Appa ko we pateki na?.„Which‟ Ge/ Ge pongngu consist of 3 syntactic patterns: Ge pongngu pa mbei mu?, Ge pongngu ku pa mbei mu?, Ge pongngu ku allu pa mbei mu?.„Where‟ Gi consist of 3 syntactic patterns: Gi dangngi nia ko na ne a nggaina?, Gi dangngi nia ko na nia a nggaina?, Gi barra nia ko na ne a nggaina?.„Who‟ Gharra/ Gharrai consist of 3 syntactic patterns: Gharra pa eta mu?, Gharrai pa pazarra mu?, Gharra pa ghewa mu?.„When‟ Pirra consist of 2 syntactic pattrens: Pirra ko bu bali umma?, Pirra ko mu bali umma?.„Whose‟ Gharra consist of 2 syntactic patterns: Gharra pena ko na ne barra meja?, Gharra pena ko ne barra meja?.„Why‟ Peina/ Ne consist of 3 syntactic patterns: Peina ka du walewe ne patua gu?, Ne ka du walengga ne pa teki gu?, Peina ka du walewe ne „How‟ Pei pata/ Peina consist of 2 syntactic patterns: Pei pata ko mu kako Ngiapu?, Peina mu kako Ngiapu?.„To Whom‟ Gharra barra/ Ka gharra barra consist of 2 syntactic patterns: Gharra barra ko na we palapor da ne marawi?, Ka gharra barra ko na we ba paduki ge ne tuba?. Based on the finding the suggestions are offered to the experts of linguistics, especially expert of syntax, and related subject should do continued study or same study to confirm and extend. The local government should prepare the fund for local language research, seminar, and workshop. People in Laura also should speak Laura Language in a proper situation.
