Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study On Speaking Ability Through Role Play Of The Eighth Grade Students Of SMPK St.Yoseph In The Academic Year 2014/2015”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph able to speak English through role play. (2) What is the students’ level of ability in speaking. (3) What might be the difficulties faced by the students in speaking. The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To find out whether the eighth grade students’ of SMPK St. Yoseph able to speak English through role play. (2) To find out the students’ level of speaking ability through role play. (3) To know the possible difficulties faced by the students’ in speaking English through role play. The study was conducted at the eighth grade students of SMPK St.Yoseph kupang. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK St.Yoseph Kupang (class VIIIA ). The total number of class VIIIA was 22 but the writer only choose 16 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was a transcription of students utterances in the role play. The collected data were analyzed based on the three aspects of speaking namely; grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. The result of this study shows that: (1) The eighth grade students of SMPK ST. Yoseph was able to speak English through role play. (2) The level of ability was classified as “HIGH ADVANCE” (14.0). there were 4 students who got score 16‒18 (Near native). There were 9 students who got score 13 ‒15 (High advance) and there were 2 students who got score 10-12 (Advance). And there was no student who got 7–9 (Intermediate) 4 – 6 (Elementary) and 1‒ 3 (Beginner). These scores were given by using analytic method offered by Hughes. (3) the first difficulties faced by the student is grammar, second is pronunciation and the last is vocabulary. Based on the result the writer suggest that the eighth grade students of SMPK St.Yoseph Kupang should practice speaking specially role play with their friends, focusing on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation aspects and keep up with their good performance, so the fluency will not decrease and the English teacher of SMPK St.Yoseph Kupang should give more attention to the students to improve their speaking specially speaking ability by giving the students chance to speak specially through role play.
