Abstract
This study is entitled: ‘’AN ANALYSIS OF MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST ITEMS OF THE ENGLISH SEMESTERAL EXAMINATION FOR THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS IN SMP N 1 AMFOANG SELATAN IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2013/2014’’. It aims to answer the following question:’’ how good are the test items in English semesteral examination prepared for the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Amfoang Selatan’’. The objective of this study is to know the quality of the test items in English semesteral examination prepare for the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Amfoang Selatan in school year 2013/2014. In order to solve this problem the writer used quantitative method to measure test item analysis especially item difficulty and discriminating power. The object of the study were multiple choice test items of English semesteral examination for the eighth grade students in SMP N 1 Amfoang Selatan in school year 2013/2014 and students answer sheet. The test consisted of 30 items. The result of the data analysis reveals that test items in English semesteral examination for the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Amfoang Selatan are moderate ( Mean of P-Value = 0.53). the test consists of 3 items are very easy items (10%), 7 items are easy items (23.3%), 12 items are moderate items (40%), 5 items are difficult (16.6%), and 3 items are very difficult (10%), and from the result of data analysis reveals that the test item of english semesteral examination for the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Amfoang Selatan are need revision ( D-Value = 0.29). the test consists of 12 items (40%) are bad item and are recommended not to be used anymore, 10 items (33.3%) are good item but the items still need revision, 8 items (26.6) are good items and can be used again. There are some suggestions offered by the writer pertaining to the result of this study: 1) The teacher should construct appropriate distractors so they have function. 2) The teacher should improve student’s inferential and critical comprehension, so the students can answer the item regarding this aspect correctly. 3) The teacher should make sure that every material which is asked in test item has already been taught. 4) In developing test item, teacher should make test item which can distinguish between master and non-master students.
