Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on Vocabulary Mastery of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 14 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. The statements of the problems are formulated as follows.1) What is the mastery level of the eight grade students of SMPN 14 Kupang in vocabulary of the human body parts domain?2) What are the difficulties encountered by the eight grade students of SMPN 14 Kupang in vocabulary of the human body parts domain? The objectives of this study are the following. 1) To find out the mastery level of the eight grade students of SMPN 14 Kupang on vocabulary of the human body parts domain?2) To find out the difficulties encountered by the eight grade students of SMPN 14 Kupang in vocabulary of the human body parts domain. The data were obtained through the test. The obtained data were analyzed through steps of correcting, scoring, and tabulating. The result of the analysis shows that the students were able to use vocabulary of the human body parts domain. It can be seen through the grades, two (10%) students are at the level of “good” 76-85, five (25%) students are at the level of “fairly good” 66-75, six (30%) students are at the level of “average” 56-65. Thus the student’s level of vocabulary mastery is “average” (59.3). Based on the result of study, the writer would like to propose the suggestions to the English teacher of SMPN 14Kupangand the eighth grade students of SMPN 14 Kupang. The teacher of English of SMPN 14 is suggested to teach and practice the use of vocabulary in general and the vocabulary of human body parts domain in particular. The vocabulary taught to the students should be in contextual use. The eighth grade students of SMPN 14 are suggested to learn and practice the use of vocabulary in general and the vocabulary of human body parts domain in particular.
