Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on the Ability in Writing a Composition Using Picture – Prompts of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1). Are the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang able to write a composition using picture- prompts? (2). What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in writing composition using picture - prompts? Where as the objectives of the study are as follows: (1). To find out whether the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 able to improve their writing composition by using picture – prompts. (2). To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in writing composition. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to explain the situation being observed while this research is done. The study was conducted at SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 with the sample of the study was 17 students of the eighth grade specially class VIIIB. The collected data were analyzed on two aspects of writing, they are grammar and form. The results of this study show that. (1). The eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang are able to write composition by using picture – prompts. (2) The average level of students’ ability is classified as “Good” (8) based on standard of measurement used. The student’s total score on grammar is: 64, and form 76. The class average score for grammar is 3.76 (bad) and form aspect is 4.5 (bad). The result of the analysis also indicated that there were no student who got (excellent) and (Very good), 14 students (82%) who got score 8-9 (good), 2 students (12%) who got score 6-7 (average), 1 student (6%) who got score 4-5 (below average), and there is no student who got score 2-3 (bad). Suggestion: teacher is encouraged to use picture prompts in helping the students to increase their writing ability because picture prompts is actually an effective media for improving students’ English ability.
