Abstract

This study entitled “A STUDY ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXTS OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK SANCTA FAMILIA SIKUMANA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) What kinds of grammatical errors that might be committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia Sikumana Kupang in writing recount texts? (2) What are the most frequent grammatical errors that might be committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familai Sikumana Kupang in writing recount texts? The objectives of study are as follows (1) to know the kinds of grammatical errors that might be committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia Sikumana Kupang in writing recount texts. (2) to know the most frequent grammatical errors that might be committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia Sikumana Kupang in writing recount texts. The method used in this study was descriptive method and in collecting the data the writer chose class VIIIA and VIIIB of SMPK Santca Familia Sikumana Kupang as the sample. Each class consists of 30–33 students and the total number of all is 63. However, the samples taken from each class were 10 students. In this case, the writer used random sampling. The writer asked them to write a recount text from the topics given by the writer such as: Christmas and New Year experience holiday, Picnic experience when holiday, The first experience when entering to the Junior High School and Their own topic. The result of this study showed that the kinds of grammatical error committed by the students were omission, addition, misformation and Misordering. Based on the result an analysis that the most frequent grammatical errors encountered by the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia Sikumana Kupang in writing recount texts were misformation (58 %) with total of errors 47, followed by Addition (23, 5 %) with the total of errors 19, Omission percentage (14, 8 %) with the total of errors 12 and Misordering (3, 7 %) the total of errors 3. Based on the result of data analysis the writer would like to purpose some suggestions to the English teacher of SPMK Sancta Familia Sikumana Kupang to give more emphasis on grammatical aspect especially in using simple past tense, subject verb agreement, plural marking, possessive pronouns and preposition because the students are still lack in these parts. For the students the writer suggests they should learn more about English especially in writing recount texts based on their knowledge and comprehension in using English grammar correctly
