Abstract

This study is entitled: “The Effectiveness of Using Picture Series in Writing Descriptive Text of Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the academic Year 2014/2015”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Do picture series improve students writing skill of descriptive text in the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang? (2) How far is the improvement of writing skill of descriptive text using picture series reached by eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the academic year of 2014/2015? The study was conducted in order to find out whether picture series improve students writing skill of descriptive text of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015 and to find out how far picture series can improve students writing skill of descriptive text if the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015. This study is limited in three aspects of writing such as of Grammar, Vocabulary and Mechanic. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015. It was class XI MIA 4 which consisted of 35 students and the writer took only 10 students to be the subject of this study. This study was conducted in one cycle. The instruments used in this study were pre-test and post-test. The methods used in the analysis of this study were quantitative data and qualitative data. The research of the study shows that using picture series in writing descriptive text to the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015 is effective. It is showed by the “average” mean score of pre test which is 9.8 and the “very good” mean score of post test which is 15.2. It means that there is an improvement of students’ writing after teaching using picture series strategy. From the observation result it is also showed that the teaching learning process in which picture series strategy was implied, run well. The situation during the teaching learning process was conducive, live, and active. Based on the result of the study the following are some suggestions that needed to be considered: (1) The result of this study shows that picture series strategy is effective in improving students’ writing skill so the English teacher is suggested to apply this strategy in his/her teaching learning process. (2) The English teacher should pay attention to students’ need and characteristics by using this strategy in teaching writing to make them easier in learning English (3) Picture series strategy can be an alternative to overcome student’s boredom in learning English. (4) This strategy or technique is suggested to be used by English teacher or others.
