Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 6 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are kinds of grammatical error made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang in writing composition? (2) What are the most common grammatical errors made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang in writing composition? Meanwhile the objectives of this study are to identify kinds of errors areas of grammatical errors encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang in writing composition. The writer used the qualitative descriptive method because it is used to describe the student’s error in writing composition. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang consisting of 40 students but the writer only took randomly 15 students as a sampling. The writer gave them chance to write composition about holiday experiences or a funny experiences, of three paragraphs. The time allocation was 90 minutes. The result of analysis shows that the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang committed errors. They committed ommision errors 24 (28.57%), addition errors 8 (9.53%), misformation errors 40 (47.61%), misordering errors 12 (14.28%). It is clearly seen that the most common error is misformation errors. A number of suggestions would be offered to many sides in accordance to their competence and responsibility. The english teacher of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang are suggested to give more attention to teach the students about grammar, vocabularies and structure and how to write a good composition. Meanwhile for the students, they are suggested to learn how to write a good text and focus on grammar especially and subject verb agreement.
