Abstract

This study was entitled: “Improving Reading Comprehension Through Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) Of The Seventh Grade Students of Smp Negeri 1 Rote Timur in the School Year 2014/ 2015”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Is the use of CSR effective in improving reading Comprehension of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Rote Timur in the School Year 2014/2015? (2) What is the achievement level of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Rote Timur in reading comprehension by using CSR? This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this study was the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Rote Timur in the school year 2014/2015. It was class VII E which consisted of 24 students to be the subject of this study. This study was conducted into one cycle. The instruments used in this study were pre-test and post-test. The methods used in this study were quantitative data (comprehension test) and qualitative data (Observation sheet). The result of the study shows that using collaborative Reading Strategy in teaching reading comprehension to the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Rote Timur in the school year 2014/2015 is effective. It is shown by (48,3 < 80). It means that there is any improvement of students’ reading comprehension after teaching using Collaborative Reading Strategy. From the observation result it is also showed that the teaching learning process in Which Collaborative Reading Strategy was implied run well. The situation during the teaching learning process was conducive, lively, and active. Based on the result of the study the following are some suggestions that need to be considered: (1) The result of this study shows that using Collaborative Strategy Reading (CSR) is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension so the English teacher is suggested to apply this strategy in his/her teaching learning process. (2) The English teacher should pay attention to students’ need and characteristics by using this strategy in teaching reading comprehension to make them easier in learning English. (3) Students should be always motivated to read because reading comprehension is one of the basic skills in learning language.
