Abstract

This research is aimed at knowing whether the speaking ability of the eight grade students of SMPN 8 Kupang can be improved after teaching using role play method. This research uses Classroom Action Research (CAR). The Classroom Action Research that is used in this research adopting the Kemmis and Mc Taggart‟s design: it consists of 2 cycles. Every cycle consists of four phases those are: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this research is the students in VIII B class of SMPN 8 Kupang. In collecting the data, this research uses observation, interview, and test. Based on the result of data analysis, the writer inferred that teaching English by using role play can improve students speaking ability. It can be proved through several data such as; pre-test and post-test. The result of the pre test shows the mean score of students score is only 58. There are only 5 students (16.60%) who got the passing score passed the minimal mastery level criterion (KKM) and in post-test the students mean score is 72.66% and there are 24 students who passed the KKM is 76.66%, so it showed the significant improvement in teaching speaking by using role play technique. In the implementation of the Action Research, the writer used 1 cycle to show the significant result showing improvement in students speaking ability by using Role Play. Moreover, by implementing role play in teaching speaking the students have chance to be active and cooperative in speaking activity. Role play method that can be effective to teach students in big class. Based on the finding of this study, the writer suggests that the English teacher could implement Role play technique in teaching speaking in order to improve their ability in learning speaking.
