Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN SPEAKING OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 6 KUPANG IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2014/2015”. It was done to answer the following questions: (1). Do the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang commit grammatical errors in speaking? (2). What are the common grammatical errors in speaking made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang? The objective of the study was to find out: (a). whether the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang commit grammatical errors in speaking and (b). to know the common grammatical errors in speaking made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang in Academic Year 2014/2015. In this study, the writer used descriptive method to find out and to know the type and the most grammatical errors made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang in speaking. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang in Academic year 2014-2015. The writer chose 20 students of class X1 Language Program as the sample, but the writer just took 10 students as the sample, and the writer took them at random. In collecting data, the writer used speaking test.The topic was one of the following: Daily Activity, Interesting Experience and friendship. The speaking was recorded and noted. The result of data analysis is the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang committed the grammatical errors in speaking and the common grammatical errors made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang is addition, with the percentages are: Omission 8 sentences (22.22%), Addition 17 sentences (47.22%), Misformation 8 sentences (22.22 %) and Misordering 3 sentences (8.34 %). The high percentage of errors that committed by the students in speaking is addition‟s type. Reffering to the result of the research, the suggestion are as follows: (1) The English teachers should pay more attention on the students‟ grammatical errors by providing practices on grammatical aspects particularly tenses, verb, noun, conjunction, adjectives and preposition. (2) The students should learn more on how to speak English focusing on the grammatical aspects regarding tenses, verb, noun, adjectives and preposition.
