Abstract

This study is entitled “A CORRELATIVE STUDY BETWEEN THE MASTERY OF VOCABULARY AND READING COMPREHENSION OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN TUABATAN MIOMAFO TENGAH IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014-2015”. It was done to answer the following hypothesis: (1) Ho: there is no correlation between the mastery of vocabulary and reading comprehension. (2) H1: there is a correlation between the mastery of vocabulary and reading comprehension. The writer just limits her study on the vocabulary and reading comprehension. She would like to know the correlation between mastery of vocabulary and reading comprehension of the Eleventh grade students of SMAN Tuabatan Miomafo Tengah by giving a task and then the students answer the question and find out the difficult words. The correlative method is used in this study. The respondents of this study are 20 students, while the instrument used in gathering the data is multiple choice test. The test consist of 40 test items, divided into two parts , 20 item tests constructed in reading comprehension and 20 item in vocabulary test. The result of data analysis indicate that the mastery of vocabulary and reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMAN Tuabatan Miomafo Tengah have a correlation. It is proved by their range of the correlation of this study that is high correlation and the value is 0, 662. Based on this finding from this study, it can be concluded that having more vocabulary mastery significantly affects the comprehension of the students reading activity. More over, by having many vocabulary the students can easily get the information and fun story written in English which finally it can enrich their knowledge by reading a lot of books. So we must reading a lot of book to get many information.
