Abstract
This study is entitled A Study on the Ability in Writing Descriptive Paragraph Based on the Pictures of the Seventh Grade Students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta in the School Year 2013/2014. This study was held to find the answer of three questions. (1) Are the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta able to write descriptive paragraph based on the pictures? (2) What is the ability level of the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta in writing descriptive paragraph based on the picture? (3) What might be the area of difficulties faced by the seventh grade students of SMPK Santa Maria Assumpta? This study focused on two aspects. They are grammar and vocabulary. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The subject of this study was the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta in the school year 2013/2014. The total number of the seventh grade students is 98. By using random sampling the writer chose class A consisting of 24 students to become the respondents of this study. The instrument of this study was writing test based on the pictures. The data were collected and analyzed. The result of the study shows that, there was no student (0%) who got highest score 12 (excellent), and also no (0%) student who got very good score 10-11. Their ability level starting from scor 8-9 (Good) to 2-3 (Bad). There were one student (4,17%) got the score 8-9 (Good), 4 students (16,67%) got score 6-7 (Average), 11 students (45,83%) got score 4-5 (Below average), and there were 8 students (33,33%) got score 2-3 (Bad). Based on the result of this study, the writer concluded that the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta in the school year 2013/214 were not able to write descriptive paragraph based on the pictures. Their level of ability is classified as below average or 4.20. Besides, they faced difficult to write the word order and vocabulary properly to describe the picture. Therefore the writer suggests that the teachers of English needed to teach and motivate the students to read more English text in order to learn and understand how to form the sentences and constructing the paragraph, especially in descriptive paragraph. The English teacher is also suggested to pay more attention to the teaching of grammar and vocabulary. The students at the researched school are suggested to study more on grammar and vocabulary so that they will be able to write descriptive paragraphs correctly.
