Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on the Ability in Using Yes-No Questions of the Ninth Grade Students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: 1. Are the ninth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang able to use yes-no questions correctly? 2. What is the students’ level of ability in using yes-no questions? 3. What are the areas of difficulties that might be faced by the ninth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang? The objectives of the study are: 1. To find out whether the students are able to use yes-no questions correctly or not. 2. To find the level of the students’ ability in using yes-no questions. 3. To find the areas of difficulties that might be faced by the ninth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang. In this study the writer employed descriptive method. To get the needed data the ninth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang were chosen to be the subject of this study. The total respondents were 29 students. The instrument used in gathering data was a test. The test consisted of 40 test items, divided into two types, namely: 20 test items constructed in Change each sentence into a yes/no question test and 20 test items constructed in Arrange the words into a good sentence test. The result of data analysis shows that the ninth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang are not able yet to use Yes-No question sentences. The ablity level of the ninth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang was “POOR” based on their average grade (4.21). There are some areas of difficulties encountered by the students in constructing yes-no question such as they have problem dealing with the proper use of auxiliary do or does in simple present tense, the correct form of auxiliary verb and main verb, double use of auxiliary verb, and also tenses. Based on the result of the study, the writer offers some suggestions: 1. The English teacher at the researched school should give more attention and explanation about Yes-No questions in order to increase the students’ ability in constructing Yes-No questions sentences. 2. The English teacher at the researched school should give the students more practices about Yes-No questions in sentences and some grammatical aspects such as tenses, the proper use of auxiliary verb in yes-no question. 3. Remedial teaching is necessary in order to make the students understand better to construct Yes-No question sentences. 4. The students must study more to improve their knowledge about using Yes-No questions.
