Abstract

It was done to answer the following questions: (1) Are the second year students of MTs Negeri Nubatukan Lembata able to comprehend the text they read?(2) What is the ability level of the second year students of MTs.Negeri Nubatukan Lembata in reading comprehension?(3) What are the area of the difficulties of MTs Negeri Nubatukan Lembata in reading comprehension? The objectives in detail are presented in the following: (1) To find out wether the second year students of MTs.Negeri Nubatukan - Lembata are able to understand the text they read.(2) To measure and to know the students’ ability level of MTs.Negeri Nubatukan- Lembata on reading comprehension (3) To identify the area of the difficulties of the students of MTs Negeri Nubatukan-Lembata in reading comprehension? The scope and limitation in this study is on the reading comprehension ability of the second year students of MTs Negeri Nubatukan and this study was limited on reading comprehension especially literal comprehension of the reading text. The method used in this study is descriptive method. It was used to describe and to find out the ability level of the students in comprehending the reading text. The subject of the study was the second year students of MTs Negeri Nubatukan in the school year 2011/2012 of class VIIIB consists of 25 students. The instrument used was 3 reading texts they are Sally which consists of 10 numbers, Mr. and Mrs. Hadianto which consists of 5 numbers, and Walking on the Clouds which consists of 5 numbers. They are adopted from Practice and Progress by L. G. Alexander and English for communication by Brendan Heasly. In collecting the data, the writer gave 3 different reading texts followed by tests. For the test, there were 3 test types, namely: essay test, multiple choice test and true or false test. Based on the analysis the writer can conclude that the second year students of MTs Negeri Nubatukan are able to comprehend the reading text and their level of ability is 7.3 % which is classified as Fairly Good. The area of difficulties faced by the students of MTs Negeri Nubatukan in comprehending the reading text are on the lack of vocabulary and the lack of grammar knowledge. Based on the results above, the writer suggests (1) for the students they must be given more exercises in the reading text and try to understand it well so they can answer the question given based on the text. (2) for the English teacher he/she should give more exercises for the students in reading especially how to write the correct word because there were many students make errors in writing the words. (Spelling, tense and sentence construction).
