Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING DESCRITIVE TEXT OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTSOFSMA NEGERI 7 KUPANG IN THESCHOOLYEAR 2016/2017”.It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1)Are the tenth grade students of SMA NEGERI 7 KUPANG able to write a descriptive text? (2) What is the ability level of tenth grade students of SMA NEGERI 7 KUPANG in writing descriptive text? The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while this research is done. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students of SMA NEGERI 7 KUPANG (class X IPS 4). The total number of class X IPS 4 was 36 but the writer only chose 20 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was writing task (write a descriptive text). The collected data were analyzed on three aspects of writing, namely; grammar, vocabulary, and form. The result of this study shows that the tenth grade students of SMA NEGERI 7 KUPANG are able to write descriptive text with the level of ability was classified as “GOOD” (10, 1).There is no student who gets the highest score 16-18 (Excellent). There are 13 students (65%) who get the score 10 – 12 (Good). There are 7 students (35%). There is no students who gets score 13-15 (very good), 4-6 (below average) and3 (Bad). These scores were given by using analytic method offered by John Anderson. There were many errors made by the students, they are Grammar or word order, followed by vocabulary, spelling and punctuation. Therefore the writer suggests the teacher of SMAN 7 Kupang to pay more attention on the teaching of grammar especially tenses choice of word, punctuation and spelling
