Abstract
It aims to answer the following question: (1) are the tenth-grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 able to speak English through story retelling strategy? (2) what is the speaking ability level of tenth grade students of SMA swasta terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in using story retelling? The objectives of the study are: (1) to find out whether or not the tenth grade students of SMA swasta terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 able to speaking English through story retelling strategy? (2) to find out the speaking ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA swasta terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 through story retelling. In order to solve these problems, the writer used a descriptive method. This method was used because the aims of the study was to describe the speaking ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA swasta terakreditasi PGRI Kupang. The subject of the study was tenth grade students of SMA swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang with the total number of 22 students. The result of the research shows that (1) The tenth grade students of SMA swasta terakreditasi PGRI Kupang are able to speak English especially in story reteling with good pronunciation, average grammatical structure and good vocabulary. (2) the level of speaking ability of the tenth grade students of SMA swasta terakreditasi PGRI Kupang is advance(11,9). Based on the result of the study and the conclusion discuss above, some suggestion can be given. (1) To the English teacher: (a) it is advisable train the students to speak English frequently and everyday and motivate the students to read English books in order to maintain and even improve their language skills especially speaking skill. (b) the English teacher should encourage the students to speak right and correct their grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. (2) to the tenth year students: (a) in order to improve their subskill(grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation) the students should frequently listen to English news, English song, and English movies. (b) they are also advised to enrich themselves with more vocabularies like reading English books, news papers, articles and attend English symposiums.
