Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on Correlation Between Students’ Mastery on Simple Past Tense and Writing Recount Text of The Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in School Year 2016/2017.” The problems of this study are: (1) How significant is the correlation between students’ mastery on simple past tense and writing recount text of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in academic year 2016/2017?, (2) What are the factors that influence students’ mastery on simple past tense and writing recount text of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri5 Kupang in academic year 2016/2017? Based on the problems, the objectives of this study are to reveal the correlation between students’ mastery on simple past tense and writing recount text, and the factor that influenced the correlation between students’ mastery on simple past tense and writing recount text. As the subjects of this study were the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang. The study is about the correlation between students’ mastery on simple past tense and writing recount text. The research showed that the average score of students’ mastery on simple past tense was 80.83 with the criteria “Good”, and average score of students’ writing recount text was 70.27 with criteria “Fairly Good”. The correlation analysis used Pearson Product-Moment formula. The result of data correlation analysis students’ mastery on simple past tense and writing recount text obtain that value coefficient correlation was 0.32, and showed that the level of correlation between both variables was low correlation. The result of this study showed that the significant of correlation between students’ mastery on simple past tense and writing recount text was not too significant. There are many factors that influenced the correlation between students’ mastery on simple past tense and writing recount text; student lack of vocabulary mastery, students did not exact used verbs in writing and students lack of mastery in mechanic in writing recount text. Therefore the English Teacher should give more motivation in studying English especially in studying simple past tense and gives more practice to improve students’ writing ability in writing recount text. Student should pay attention in writing recount text by using grammar. For the other researchers this thesis can be a reference for other researcher to conduct the next research and they should plan time well and as this study focused on correlation between students’ mastery on simple past tense and writing recount text, it is highly recommended to others researcher to make better correlation in improving students’ mastery on grammar and writing text.
