Abstract

This study is entitled “The Use of Movie to Improve Speaking ability of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang In the School Year 2016/2017”. It was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Is the teaching speaking using movie to improve speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang effective or not? (2) What is the speaking ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang after being taught by using movie?. The objectives of the study are the following (1) To describe whether the use of movie to improve speaking ability to the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang effective or not. (2) To identify the level of the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 after being taught using movie. This study belongs to the Classroom Action Research (CAR) developed by Kemmis and McTaggart (1992). The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang. But for this study, the writer chose XI science class. The total number of the students in the class is 40 students, but the writer only took 20 students to be the samples of this study. In collecting the data, the writer used the instruments observation and test. Meanwhile, a statistical analysis and interpretation are applied to analyze the data of this study. After analyzing the data, it was found that the pretest result of this study was very low and categorized as “below average” in which the students‟ average score is 50.70 of 100 and only 4 students or 20.00% of the subject was able to pass the test. In the cycle I, the students‟ average score was 71.35 of 100 and 15 students 0r 90.00% of the subject was able to pass the test and categorized as “good”. It means that there is a progress of students‟ achievement after being taught using movie. In the second cycle result, the students‟ average score was 80.00 of 100 and 18 students or 95.00% of the subject was able to pass the test and categorized as “Very good”. Based on this result, it can be concluded that the use of movie improves the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang. By using a different technique like role play, the researcher was able to improve students‟ speaking ability. The presence of movies as the media to improve students‟ speaking ability had given a significant progress toward their speaking. Since they were never taught by using movie, the presence of this research also gave the students new perspective that they could also relate the material to their hobby like movie, music and any others.
