Abstract
This study aims to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 able to write a recount text? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in writing a recount text? (3) What are the difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in writing a recount text?. The objectives of this study are (1) To know whether the eighth grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 are able to write a recount text or not. (2) To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in writing a recount text. (3) To find the difficulties faced by eighth grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in writing a recount text. The writer chose eighth grade students especially class VIII A. They are 24 students to become the subject of this study, 1 student from them did not come at the time of research, so only 23 students treated as the subject of this study. The instrument used for the research was writing test. The writer asked the students to write recount text by choosing one of the prepared topics. The topics are My Holiday, My Terrible Experience and My Unforgettable Moment. Based on the analysis the writer can conclude that: (1) The eighth grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 are able to write recount text. (2) The ability level of eighth grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in writing recount text is”good” (20-24). (3) The problems faced by the students are the use of grammatical aspects such as (simple past tense), the use of generic structure, how to put the commas and the full stops of the sentences and how to continue with capital after the full stop. Besides, the writer found that there were no students who get the highest score. There were 9 students getting 25-29 (very good), there were 13 students getting 20-24 (good), there was just 1 student getting 15-19 (average) and was no student getting 10-14 (below average), 5-9 (bad). Therefore the writer suggests (1) The teacher should give more explanations to the students about the generic structure and the use of past verb. (2) The teacher should give more attention to students about the mechanics aspect especially in writing a recount text. (3) The students should be focus on the teacher‟s explanation so they cannot do the same mistakes again.
