Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Is the translation done by the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Kupang in the academic year 2016/2017 good or bad? (2) What are the areas of difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Kupang in the academic year 2016/2017 in doing translation? The objectives of the study are the following: (1) To find out whether the translation done by the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Kupang in the academic year 2016/2017 is good or bad. (2) To know the areas of difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Kupang in the academic year 2016/2017 in translating a narrative text from Bahasa Indonesia Into English. To answer those questions above, the writer applied descriptive method. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Kupang. The total number of the eleventh grade students is 95 distributed in 4 classes. But in this study, the writer chose Science Class. The reason of choosing Science Class as the subject of this study is that the students in this class have sufficient knowledge of English based on the information of their English teacher. They consist of seventeen students. However, in obtaining data, only 16 students were present while 1 student was absent. So there were 16 students as the respondents of this study. In collecting the data, the writer used translation test. The test consists of twelve sentences of narrative text written in Indonesian language. The result of the study shows that (1) the translation of narrative text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Kupang in the academic year 2016/2017 is bad. In fact from 192 sentences, 76 (39.58%) sentences are correctly translated or good while 116 (60.42%) are wrong or bad. (2) Meanwhile, the areas of difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Kupang in translating a narrative text from Bahasa Indonesia into English are on grammatical points, vocabulary, and meaning (content). Based on the result of the research, some suggestions are offered by the writer. (1) The teacher of English should teach English Grammar particularly about tenses, preposition, conjunction, and give more translation exercise to improve and increase grammatical structure and vocabulary or lexicon of English as the main qualification of doing translation. (2) In teaching English, the teacher should give more exercises to the students in translating a text from Bahasa Indonesia into English at least one topic in every English meeting. (3) The students are suggested to learn more about English grammar and practice translation from Bahasa Indonesia into English.
