Abstract
This study is entitled “AN ANALYSIS ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING A TEXT OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK ST. THERESIA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2016/2017”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What kinds of errors commited by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in writing a text? (2) What are the most common errors commited by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in writing a text? The objectives of this study are the following (1) To find out the kinds of errors commited by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in writing a text. (2) To find out the most common errors commited by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in writing a text. The writer used the descriptive method because it is used to describe the student‟s errors in writing a text. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang. They consisted of 29 students of class b and the writer only took 20 students‟ worksheets as a sampling. The writer gave them topics to choose. They were: my hobby, my lovely mother/father/brother/sister and lasiana beach. The writing should consist of two or three paragraphs. The time allocation was 90 minutes. The result of analysis shows that (1) the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang committed errors. They committed omission errors 64 (55%), misformation errors 33 (28%), addition errors 13 (11%), and misordering errors 7 (6%). (2) It is clearly seen that the most common error is ommision errors. Based on that result, the writer would like to suggest that: The students should master grammatical aspects in producing a descriptive text. Realizing that poor grammar in writing can violate the content of the writing, the writer suggests that it should be better for English teacher to teach and really pay attention to the grammatical aspects of writing.
