Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1). Is the se of making match technique effective in teaching the vocabulary of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Fatuknutuk, Malaka in the school year 2016/2017? (2). What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Fatuknutuk, Malaka after being taught using make match technique? The objectives of this study are: (1). To find out whether the use of make match technique in increasing the eighth-grade students’ vocabulary is effective or not (2). To find out the vocabulary ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Fatuknutuk, Malaka after being taught using make match technique. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Fatuknutuk, Malaka in the school year 2016/2017. There is only one class of the eighth grade. The class consisting of 28 students, but 10 of them were absent, so only 18 students treated as the subject of this study. This study was limited in increasing the vocabulary ability of the eight grade students of SMP Ngeri Fatuknutuk, Malaka in the school year 2016/2017. The writer used make match technique to teach the vocabulary in this research. Make Match Technique was developed by Curran (1994). There was some instrument used in this research such as; lesson Plan, Observation Sheet, Test, questionnaires and documentation. Based on the result of analysis, it is found that, (1). The use of make match technique is effective in increasing the vocabulary ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Fatuknutuk, Malaka in the school year 2016/2017. In the pre-test, only 4 students (22.2%) got score higher than the KKM with the mean score of students’ achievement was 49.9. The students’ achievement was increased in cycle one and two after taught using Make Match Technique. In posttest cycle one, there were 11 students (66%) got score higher than the KKM with the mean score of students’ achievement was 65.5 and in cycle two, there was only one student failed or there were 94.4% success with the mean score of students’ achievement was 85. (2). The vocabulary ability level of eight grade students of SMP Fatuknutuk, Malaka in the school year 2016/2017 is Very Good (85). Based on result of the study the writer gives some suggestion (1). For the English teacher: (a). If teachers want to apply Make Match Technique, they need to prepare a good planning not only in the teaching aid but also in managing the time before entering the classroom. Teacher has to be more creative and active in applying this technique in teaching Vocabulary so that students do not get bored easily and to increase students’ interest in learning vocabulary. (b). If an English teacher/ the other teacher wants to try applying this technique to his/her class, he/she should apply it to the class with the total of students about 15 – 25 students, x because Make Match Technique is more suitable with the class of the minim students so that it makes the teacher or researcher easier to control and analyze the data about all students’ improvement in that class. (2). For the students: (a). learning English vocabulary using media such as picture cards is fun. The students should use appropriate and fun media to learn English vocabulary, so that they don’t get bored easily before mastered the vocabulary.
