Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the process of lateral thinking of students in solving mathematical problems in terms of cognitive style. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects in this researcher are two students of X SMA Ki Hajar Dewantoro Kupang. Both students were selected based on the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) test, then the researcher gave the problem-solving task, the Interview, to each subject. The students' lateral thinking processes in mathematical problem solving are based on the assessment of problem solving tasks (TPM) completed by the subjects with a review of 3 indicators ie interpretation = able to understand the problem, explain and provide information, analysis = able to identify the relationship of the information used for expressing thoughts or opinions, explanation = able to combines several ideas in solving the problem correctly. Data analysis in this research is done by reducing data, presenting data, and make conclusion. The results of this study indicate that FI subjects and FD subjects have similarities in lateral thinking processes by altering the prepsions and their viewpoints in observing the problem so as to create a different alternative way of settlement and depending on the formula used. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that teachers can design mathematical learning that focuses on the thinking process of students in their lateral thinking skills by providing open math problems. In the learning process, teachers should guide students' lateral thinking skills in accordance with the different cognitive styles of each student so that lateral thinking skills increase.
