Abstract
This research is a qualitative research which aims to describe the mathematical problem solving abilities of students in class VII B semester 2 of the 2018/2019 academic year in Angkasa Kupang Middle School on the subject of social arithmetic. The subjects in the study were students of class VII B Angkasa Kupang Middle School. Determination of research subjects seen from the value of mathematics UTS students. Students' abilities are categorized into three types of abilities, namely high ability, moderate ability and low ability, therefore 9 students are required to occupy the three types, then 3 students are selected from each type of ability. Data collection is done through problem solving ability tests and interviews. The results showed that the ability to solve the Angkasa Kupang Middle School students in solving mathematical problems in social arithmetic material was as follows: students with high mathematical abilities were able to solve problems in accordance with the steps of problem solving so students were able to meet the problem solving indicators. Students with mathematical abilities are in the process of solving a given problem, able to solve problem solving problems and fulfill all indicators, but in a number of other steps it is less systematic in resolving it but students are able to meet the problem solving indicators. Students with low mathematical abilities are only able to complete the steps of understanding problems, plan problems and solve problems but are not right and correct so students are not able to meet indicators of problem solving. Based on the results of this study, it is desirable that teachers in the field of mathematics studies of Angkasa Kupang Middle School further improve students' ability to solve problems by familiarizing students with solving problems or problems given by the ability possessed by the fiber to be able to account for the results to anyone. Thus students are better able to understand the material given.
