Abstract

Elia Simon. 2018. “The Different Language Use between Male and Female of The Third Semester Students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in Academic Year 2018/2019”. Thesis of Language and Art Department. English Study Program. Advisor I Dr. Drs. Kletus Erom, M.Hum and advisor II Maria G. Djehatu, S.Pd, M.Pd. This research was done to answer the following problem statements 1) What are the differences of language use between male and female of the third-semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in academic year 2018/2019? 2)Why do the male and female of the third-semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in academic year 2018/2019 use language differently?. Based on the two questions, the objectives of this research are to find out two answers 1) The differences language use betweem male and female of the third semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in academic year 2018/2019. 2) The reason why male and female of the third semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in academic year 2018/2019 use language differently. The participants of this research were 18 English for Foreign Language (EFL) learners. They were the third-semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in academic year 2018/2019, with the equal number of males and females; nine males and nine females. A qualitative research was used to conduct this sociolinguistics research where the researcher used two instruments; DCT (Discourse Completion Test) and observation. The researcher designed questions for interview based on the Differences Approach by Tannen (1990). The researcher used voice recorder as a tool in recording the conversations in the twomeeting interviews. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found out the differences of language use among the participants follow: 1) Female participants used exaggerated adjectives and adverbs (it’s very good! gorgeous) 34 times, while males used only 13 times. 2) Female participants used expletives (Oh dear!, oh my God! oh! Wow!) 27 times, whereas males used only 11 times. 3) Eight out of nine female participants addressed their same gender friends as sayang, cin, etc., which considered as an exaggerated pronoun, whereas, males used bro (brother) or call their names. 4) Female particpants gave supportive words and empathy more often than males did. They used 20 times while males only 10 times. 5) Females used 28 times proposal pattern (less imperative sentence) while males used 18 times. 6) seven out of nine female participants chose gossips while all of the males and two females chose sport as the most topic of conversation they had. The reason why the participants used language differently because they have their own personalities, expression, and ways of reaction during the interview. sThus, the researcher has some suggestion to several parties 1) the future researchers and linguists; they should carry out more research among EFL learners. 2) the readers; they should not lead conversations with different gender speaker to the prejudice and discrimination against each other, because every single person is unique, and the biggest mistake is believing there is one right way to talk.
