Abstract

The goal of this study are to answer the following questions: (1). What types of misunderstanding and non-understanding repair in conversation between the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang? (2). Who does the repair that ooccurs in conversation of the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang? The method that the writer used for this study was Descriptive Qualitative Method. The aim of this method was to describe the communicative competence of the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang. The study was conducted at SMA Negeri 3 Kupang. The total number of the subject of the study is 32 students. The writer chose 20 students randomly and divided them into ten pairs to be the sample of the study. The instrument of this study was the conversation which the writer prepared some topics of conversation and the students were asked to choose the topics prepared. The conversation was recorded by using video recorder (handycam). The result of this study showed that the types of misunderstanding and non-understanding repair in conversation of the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang were done by doing repetition, confirmation check, and clariffication request and modification both in self or other initiated repair. The writer also found that the students were able to repair themselve whether in self repair and other repair, in order to maintain the flow of conversation, even though the repair initations were low, the writer found there were only few repairs from many possibilites of repair of the trouble sources in the conversation. The self repair occured through the quasi lexical fillers, pauses, and repetitions and clarification meanwhile other repair occured through confirmation and modification. Based on the data analysis, finally, the writer suggested: (1). For the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang to learn more about the gramar,and practice their speaking abilty regularly through conversation by doing English speaking club, Englih debating or discussion with their peers orally. (2). The English teacher of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang should give more attention, motivtion and time for the students in order to develop their speaking ability in classroom.
