Abstract

This research stems from the researcher's concern about the fading knowledge among the younger generation regarding traditions in local culture, especially customary rituals within a culture. The study delves deeper into the social meaning embedded in customary rituals, particularly traditions that have been passed down from one generation to the next. In the province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), there are numerous traditions thriving within the community, some of which have become familiar to the people. However, due to technological advancements and urbanization, several young people in Indonesia, particularly in East Nusa Tenggara province, have abandoned these traditions due to technological advances and urbanization. Therefore, this study focuses on the social meaning of customary rituals in cultural ceremonies, utilizing two data collection techniques: in-depth interviews and document studies. The study employs a qualitative research method through a case study approach. The local tradition of Reba, specifically the Su'i Uwi customary ritual practiced in the Mangulewa community, Golewa Barat, Ngada, NTT, is considered one of the highly valued traditions that unifies the people with its significant historical background for the Ngada community. It narrates the contributions of the ancestors and the highest manifestation that created all forms of sustenance, one of which is uwi (sweet potato), a staple food for the Ngada people believed to be provided endlessly by the earth. This customary ritual indirectly depicts the origin of the Ngada people through the Su'i Uwi ritual. The research findings indicate that the Su'i Uwi ritual in the Reba ceremony holds social significance manifested through togetherness, brotherhood, and community unity, which are expressed through family gatherings for collective prayers, communal meals, singing, and dancing together. During the family gatherings, the community evaluates family matters concerning issues occurring within the "sa'o pu'u" (traditional house) and seeks reconciliation and resolution during the Reba ceremony. Additionally, collective prayers and meals are realized through the ritual of "mate manu" (the sacrifice of a native chicken) conducted by traditional elders and witnessed by the community of that particular tribe. After the "mate manu" process, all community members partake in the meal prepared by ana sa'o. Furthermore, the collective singing and dancing involve the entire community, as they perform the O uwi chanting ritual in the "loka nua" (village) as an expression of gratitude to the ancestors and the highest manifestation.
