Abstract

This research is entitled "PERCEPTIONS OF EFL STUDENTS ON THE USE OF YOUTUBE VIDEOS IN LEARNING ENGLISH" This research was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are the students' perceptions of using YouTube videos in learning English? (2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of using YouTube videos in learning English based on EFL students' perceptions? The main objectives of this study are: (1) To find out the EFL students' perceptions of using Youtube videos in learning English. (2) To find out the advantages and disadvantages of using YouTube videos in learning English based on EFL students' perceptions. The research subjects were eighth semester students of the English language education study program, Widya Mandira Catholic University, Kupang.While the number of subjects is 25 students. In collecting data, researchers used a mix-method using questionnaires as quantitative data and interviews as qualitative data. The results of data analysis of the 20 questionnaire items show that 73% of the eighth semester students agree that YouTube videos have positive impacts in learning English. Meanwhile, based on the results of the interview data, it shows that YouTube videos provide many advantages, especially as a medium for learning English both in class and as media for learning English independently. Based on the results above, the writer could suggest 1. For English lecturers, using YouTube as a learning media is necessary because YouTube provide English learning materials and explanations on listening, speaking, reading, writing, sub skills, and also English content materials. This suggestion is supported by the perceptions of students who agree, and feel helped by the YouTube video link provided as a learning resource and doing assignments. 2. For students, based on research results, the perception of EFL students towards the use of YouTube videos in learning English is positive. So, YouTube videos can be a medium that to learn and improve English skills for independent learning and in class.
