Abstract

This research is a qualitative research that aims to find out the description of students' mathematical problem solving profiles in the matter of fraction story problems for class VIII SMPK St. Familia Kupang based on Polya's steps in the even semester. The subjects in this study were 3 students from class VIII SMPK St. Kupang family. Subjects were selected based on the results of the problem-solving ability test on the material about Fractions. Based on the results of the problem solving tests, they were grouped into 3 groups, namely students with high, medium and low solving abilities. Data collection techniques in this study were tests and interviews. The test used in this research is the problem solving test. After being given the test, an interview is then conducted with the subject to clarify the results that have been written. The results of this study are high ability students are able to carry out all stages of problem solving based on Polya, namely understanding the problem, making plans, implementing plans and checking again. Students with moderate abilities in solving problems based on Polya's steps only carry out some of the stages of problem solving, namely being able to understand problems, make plans, carry out plans but are not yet optimal and have not carried out the stages of checking again. Students with low ability in solving problems based on Polya's steps only carry out several stages of problem solving, namely being able to understand the problem and are still wrong in making plans, have not been maximal in carrying out plans and have not been able to carry out the stages of re-checkin.
