Abstract

This research is entitled "A Study on The Ability of Ninth Grade Students of Smp Negeri 10 Kupang in Using Modal Auxiliaries". The formulation of the research problem is as follows, (1) Are the ninth-grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang able to use capital auxiliaries? (2) What is the level of ability of the ninth-grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in using modal auxiliaries? This study is based on theory from Barus 1989, with some additions and modifications. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. Participants in this study were grade 9 students at SMP Negeri 10 Kupang. The total number of participants was 30 people, 15 boys and 15 girls. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 10 Kupang. This research took two weeks, in November 2022. The instrument used in this study was a multiple choice questionnaire. The questionnaire was given to all participants is 40 questions for the questionnaire. The results showed that grade ninth students still had difficulties in using modals auxiliaries. In addition, only a few students understand the use of modals can, will, could, must, may, and should.
