Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the mistakes made by students in solving operational questions in algebraic forms based on Watson's criteria. This research was conducted at SMPK St. John Don Bosco Putain. The subjects in this study were 3 class VII students, each of whom had high, medium and low mathematical abilities. Data collection techniques in this study used problem solving test techniques and interviews. The validity of the data was carried out by technical triangulation, namely comparing the results of the problem solving test and the results of the interviews on question number 1, question number 2, question number 3, and question number 4. This study uses error analysis with Watson's criteria, namely incorrect data errors, improper procedural errors, missing data errors, response level conflict errors, indirect manipulation errors, skill hierarchy problem errors, and errors other than the seven categories above. The analysis technique is carried out by correcting the results of the research subject's work in order to analyze the mistakes made by students, analyzing the results of student interviews to see the causes of errors made by students and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that of the 4 questions worked on, research subject I (S1) made an error in the skill hierarchy problem in solving problem number 3 about multiplication of algebraic forms, research subject II (S2) made an incomplete procedure error in solving question number 2 about subtraction of algebraic forms, question number 4 concerning the division of algebraic forms, and making inferences lost in solving questions number 1 to number 4 concerning addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of algebraic forms, while research subject III (S3) made an error in the skill hierarchy problem in complete question number 2 about subtraction of algebraic forms, question number 3 about multiplication of algebraic forms, and make missing conclusions in solving questions number 1 to number 4 about addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of algebraic forms. This shows that the mistakes made by students in solving algebraic arithmetic operations are in accordance with Watson's criteria.
