Abstract

This research is a qualitative research that aims to describe the high-level thinking skills of junior high school students in solving HOTS questions in terms of students' academic abilities. Students' difficulties in solving number pattern problems with types. The subjects in this study consisted of three students with high academic abilities. Research subjects were also selected according to the results of discussions between the mathematics teacher and the researcher. Data collection was in the form of HOTS test results and interview results based on indicators of higher order thinking skills, as well as Polya problem solving, including: Understanding the problem, designing a problem solving strategy, carrying out a calculation plan, and re-evaluating the truth obtained. Data analysis includes organizing the data obtained from the results of tests and interviews, reading the data, studying and collecting information in carrying out written tests and from the results of the interviews. Checking the validity of the data using the triangulation method. The results of the study conclude that subject 01 (S1) and subject 02 (S2) are categorized as "capable" of solving HOTS type number pattern questions for indicators of analyze (analyze), evaluate (evaluate), and create (create), and pay attention to the four steps of problem solving Polya. While subject 2 (S2) is only "able" in the indicators of analyze (analyze), and create (create), while for the evaluate indicator (evaluate), S2 students are categorized as incapable. This is due to time constraints.
