Abstract

This study is entitled “AN ANALYSIS OF THE LISTENING ABILITY OF THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 6 KUPANG TENGAH IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2022/2023”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1.What is the listening ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Kupang Tengah in filling the missing words and answer the questions when listening to the English songs? 2. What might be the difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Kupang Tengah in filling the missing words and answer the questions when listening to the English songs? The main objectives of this study are: 1.To find out the listening ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Kupang Tengah by filling the missing words and answer the questions while listening to the English song. 2. To find out the difficulties of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Kupang Tengah in filling the missing words and answers the questions when listening to the English song. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Kupang Tengah in the school year 2022/2023. While the number of the subject was 31 students. In collecting data, the writer gave two songs. The songs were My Love By Westlife and Rigth Here Waiting by Rihard Marx. The result of the data analysis shows that the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Kupang are able to fill the mising words and answer the questions when listening to the English songs. Their level of ability is “Good” (78.87). Besides, it can be seen that there are 19 students (61.29%) at excellent level, 5 students (16.12%) at good level, 1 student (3.22%) at average level, 4 students (12.90%) at poor level, 2 students (6.45%) at bad level. Even though the majority of students answered excellent, there were some students who scored below standard. From the results of the interviews some of the difficulties faced by these students were the difficulty in understanding the meaning of the songs and the questions given. Limited knowledge of English was the main reason for some of these students not answering the questions correctly. There are students who are wrong with the answers chosen because according to them there are similarities in the writing and sound in the questions, there are students who choose the wrong answer because they confused with the lyrics. In addition, the lack of student interest in learning English also affects their low grades. Based on the result above, the writer could suggest 1. For the English Teachers of the Researched School. Teacher must pay more attention to the level of student’s abilities in learning English, especially in listening skill so that teacher is able to create creative learning style and make students to be enthusiastic in learning English, especially in listening material. By preparing creative learning materials, teacher can help the students to improve their English skills, both in vocabulary and pronunciation. 2. For the Students can improve their listening skills by listening to English broadcast, songs, videos, and conversation so they can learn more words or vocabulary.
