Abstract

This research aims to discuss the implementation of the spirit of Arnoldus Janssen as a strategic design for the Monastery of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in Bikono, Baumata, Kupang Regency. Arnoldus Janssen, the founder of SVD, is known as a visionary figure with a high dedication to religious mission. The initial step of this research is to develop a profound understanding of the history of Arnoldus Janssen, the forms and expressions of architecture, and its principles. The analytical stage consists of several steps: First, recording the results of in-depth interviews with monastery community members and studying documentation related to monastery planning and construction. The second step is to describe the overall building form and each of its elements based on the principles of identification– balance; hierarchy– orientation; and architectural anatomy. The next step is to interpret the architectural expressions that emerge in each scope based on the results of substituting Arnoldus Janssen’s spirit. This research concludes that the principles of inclusivity, spirituality, and sustainability can be integrated into every architectural element, thus creating an architectural environment that supports the life of the religious community. The research findings can enrich the theoretical framework of architecture by relating the understanding of Arnoldus Janssen’s spiritual legacy to the strategy of designing the architectural form and expression of the SVD Monastery in Bikono. The implementation of this research can also serve as a design reference for architects and stakeholders because Arnoldus Janssen’s spirit is not only a foundation of spirituality but also a guide in shaping physical spaces that reflect religious values and the goals of the religious mission.
