Abstract
This thesis is titled "Perceptions of Youth Towards the Soga Madak Tradition" (Case Study on Youth in Lamabelawa Village, Witihama District, East Flores Regency). Youth in Lamabelawa Village practice the Soga Madak tradition following a death. This tradition is seen by the local community, particularly the youth, as a ritual for summoning or restoring the spirits of the deceased. Therefore, the author aims to explore “What are the perceptions of the youth in Lamabelawa Village regarding the Soga Madak tradition?”. The conceptual foundation used in this study includes the definitions of communication, culture, tradition, customary ceremonies, the theory and concept of perception, factors influencing perception, as well as the concept of youth and age boundaries. This research employs a case study method with a descriptive qualitative approach. The unit of analysis consists of eight informants, including traditional leaders, community figures, and youth aged 20-24 years in Lamabelawa Village who have information about the Soga Madak tradition. Based on the research findings, the youth of Lamabelawa Village view the Soga Madak tradition as a customary ceremony or ritual to summon the spirits of the deceased so that they may live properly in the afterlife. Currently, it is believed that the spirits of the deceased have entered the house and joined the family. The stages of the Soga Madak ceremony include: 1. Bau Lolon and Wayak Wua (Drinking Tuak and Eating Betel Nut), 2. Pusak Belega (Processing Cotton into Small Pellets), 3. Soga Madak (Raising the Bale-Bale), 4. Poro or Howak Ewan (Animal Sacrifice), 5. Bua Geri Lamak (Eating Together). The indicators contained in the Soga Madak tradition include cooperation, kinship, religious values, and social-cultural values that are highly respected in this ceremony. These values are well-established between individuals, individuals and the community, the community itself, and the community with the spirits, who are believed to always protect them from threats or disasters.
