Abstract

This research aims to find out students' perceptions of the Instagram account @ntt.update in reporting criminal events in East Nusa Tenggara (Case Study of Communication Science Students at Widya Mandira Catholic University, Kupang). This research uses Media Ecology theory. This research is interesting to research because researchers see that nowadays many students like to read the news or are interested in news that is going viral, especially news or events about criminal cases that are currently occurring in East Nusa Tenggara. The media studied in this research is Instagram social media. This research uses several data collection techniques, namely, interviews and documentation. This research uses a case study research method. This type of research is qualitative. The data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of interviews conducted with informants, researchers found that the informants' perceptions regarding posts about news or criminal events on the Instagram account @ntt.update have information value for the people of NTT, especially the people of Kupang City, to know. Based on the research that has been carried out, researchers can conclude that the social media Instagram @ntt.update is a complete and practical information service regarding viral events occurring in Kupang City or NTT which aims to fulfill the need for information.
