Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the reasoning ability of class VII junior high school students of SMPK Santa Maria Assumpta Kupang in solving mathematical problems on social arithmetic material. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects in this study were selected from class VII C students of SMPK Santa Maria Assumpta Kupang in the odd semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. The subjects in this study were three subjects with the category of one high-ability student, one medium-ability student, and one low-ability student. The subjects of this study were selected based on their activeness in class, summative and formative values, and discussions with mathematics subject teachers of SMPK Santa Maria Assumpta. Data collection was carried out using several methods, including social arithmetic tests and interview guidelines. The data analysis technique used in this study consisted of three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that: high student reasoning ability indicates that students are able to fulfill the four indicators of reasoning, namely: Providing written mathematical statements, Performing mathematical manipulations, Providing reasons or evidence for several solutions, and Drawing logical conclusions. Medium student reasoning ability indicates that students are able to fulfill three indicators of reasoning ability but there is one indicator that is not fulfilled, namely: providing written mathematical statements, performing mathematical manipulations, drawing logical conclusions. Low student reasoning ability is only able to fulfill one indicator of mathematical reasoning, namely: providing written mathematical statements.
