Abstract

Synthesis and modification of silica gel from amethyst ash from Nian village, TTU district with diphenylcarbazide ligand has been carried out. This study aims to determine the study of synthesis and silica gel modification and its characteristics. Synthesis and modification stages are testing the chemical composition of amethyst samples, silica gel synthesis, silica gel modification with composition variation (silica gel / diphenylcarbazide) and time modification variation. Silica gel synthesis was carried out by inserting amethyst ash into a 3 M NaOH solution and stirring at a constant speed at 120 °C for 1 hour, then filtered. The filtrate obtained was added with 1 M H2SO4 solution to form a gel and then dried in the oven. The results showed that the chemical elements contained in the amethyst sample was Si with a 94.6 %. Silica gel was successfully made from amethyst ash, supported by the results of FTIR spectra characterization in which the silanol group (≡Si-OH) appeared in the wavenumber region 948.98 cm-1 , the absorption of OH groups appeared at wave number 3200-3600 cm-1 and siloxane group (≡Si-O-Si≡) at wave number 1074.35 cm-1 . The modification of silica gel with diphenylcarbazide ligand has been successfully demonstrated with the results of FTIR spectra characterization appearing CN group vibration absorption at wavenumbers 2210-2280 cm-1 and CO group vibrations at wave number 1050- 1300 cm-1 . Optimum time modification occurs at 4 hours with the emergence of CH alkane functional groups but at 2 hours and 6 hours, alkane CH functional groups are not visible. XRD data shows that the SiO2 diffraction angle pattern with types of minerals are quartz.
