Abstract
This study aims to analyze how CNN Indonesia's online media framed news coverage regarding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) groups from August to December 2023. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using Robert N. Entman's framing analysis model, which emphasizes four main elements: defining problems, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments, and suggesting remedies. Out of 36 published news articles, seven relevant articles were selected as research samples for in-depth analysis. The findings indicate that CNN Indonesia tends to emphasize narratives aligned with the conservative values dominant in Indonesian society, encompassing religious, cultural, and social perspectives. The framing predominantly highlights the viewpoints of formal institutions such as ITB, UGM, KUA, and authoritative figures, while relatively sidelining the voices of the LGBT community and human rights activists. This limits the space for inclusive discourse and reinforces dominant norms. The coverage also emphasizes administrative solutions and norm enforcement to maintain social order, thus avoiding open polarization but providing limited defense for the LGBT community. These findings reveal a discrepancy between CNNIndonesia.com’s stated vision and mission of not acting as a “judge” and its reporting practices, which tend to marginalize certain groups. Therefore, this study recommends that the media adopt a more balanced approach by providing space for marginalized groups’ perspectives. Additionally, future research could employ alternative framing theories for comparison to achieve a more comprehensive understanding.
