Abstract

This research is titled "The Motivation Behind the Use of Pseudonyms by Family 21 in Protecting Privacy on TikTok." TikTok has grown into a popular platform for self-expression, especially among teenagers. However, as digital exposure increases, so does the need to protect one’s privacy and personal identity. This has led some teenagers, including members of the Family 21 community, to use pseudonyms as a strategy for managing their digital identities. The use of pseudonyms serves as a way to limit access to personal information, avoid negative judgment, and allow freedom of expression without social pressure from the offline world. The study aims to identify the motivations behind teenagers' use of pseudonyms and analyze how this strategy contributes to privacy protection and comfort in using social media. Employing Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological approach, the study interprets social actions based on two types of motives: because of motive and in order to motive. Because of motive refers to past negative experiences, such as bullying, unpleasant comments, or discomfort when one's real identity is exposed. In order to motive includes the desire to maintain a positive self-image, create boundaries between personal and digital life, experience expressive freedom, and feel safe while engaging on TikTok. The findings reveal that pseudonyms are not merely false names but represent a conscious privacy management strategy influenced by adolescents’ subjective experiences and psychological needs in the digital social world.
