Abstract

This research is a qualitative research that aims to describe the ability of junior high school students' mathematical connections in solving flat math problems. The subjects in this study consisted of three students with high, medium, and low mathematical abilities selected based on information from the mathematics subject teacher. Data collection in the form of results tests of mathematical connection ability and interview results based on indicators of mathematical connection ability. Data analysis includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Checking the validity of the data uses time triangulation. The results of data exposure and analysis conclude that (1) Highly skilled students can connect ideas in one subject of mathematics and connections between ideas of one subject and other fields. High-ability students still remember the mathematical ideas well so that they can connect ideas in one mathematical subject and connections between ideas of one subject and other fields. This can be seen by word of mouth or writing. (2) Students with moderate ability are able to connect ideas in one mathematical subject and connections between ideas of one subject and other fields. However, students with moderate abilities based on writing are able to connect ideas in one mathematical subject and connections between ideas of one subject and other fields. However, based on the verbal, the students with moderate ability still looked doubtful and a little confused. (3) Low-ability students have not been able to connect ideas in one mathematical subject and connections between ideas of one subject and other fields.
