Abstract

This study wasconducted toanswer the following questions: (1). Are the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus in the school year2017/2018 able to speak English or not? (2).What is the level of students speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus in the school year 2017/2018. (3).What are the difficulties faced in their speaking? The objectives of the studyare:(1).To find outwhether the eleventh grade students are able to speak English or not(2).To find out and to know the level of speaking ability of the eleventh grade students (3). To find out the difficulties faced by the students in their speaking. Descriptive method was applied to describe the students’ ability level in speaking. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMAK SINT CAROLUS Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. While the number ofthesubject is 22 but only 10 studentsweretreated as the subject ofthestudy. The instrument used in this study was a test of oral monologue of procedure text. This study was limited in three aspects of speaking are: grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Based on the result of the analysis, the writer found that, (1) The eleventh grade students of SMAK SINT CAROLUS Kupangin the school year 2017/2018 are able to speak English especially in oral monologue of making things. (2) The level of speaking ability of the eleventh grade students is Very good (15.5).(3) The difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students in their speaking are pronunciation. It can be seen from the result of the study, the student ability level of each element, as follow: Score of grammar is 55and the average is 5.5.Score of vocabulary is 52and the average is 5.2. Score of pronunciation is 48 and the average is 4.8. Based on the result, the writer gives some suggestions. (1) The English teacher should be advisable to train the students to speak English in front of class in presenting something like procedure text or the other material, and motivate the students in order to read more to increase their language skill.(2)Thestudents should try to improve their pronunciation, by listeningto theradio, song and TV programs which use English. They are also advised to enrich themselves with more vocabularies, suchasby reading English book. In the classroom ifstudent do notunderstand yet what their English teacher teaches, they should ask their English teacher.
