Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to determine the important role of realistic mathematics learning on the mathematical understanding ability of junior high school students. The background of this research is the low mathematical understanding ability of students of SMP Negeri 2 kupang. Based on observations in the mathematics learning process it was found that students were less interested in learning mathematics. This is caused by several factors including (1) mathematics learning so far generally does not provide opportunities for students to develop strategic thinking skills, teachers only emphasize their students to memorize all formulas or concepts without understanding their meaning, (2) so far learning centered the teacher (the use of lecture methods in learning mathematics) so that students are only used as learning objects, (3) in learning teachers rarely deliver material in a tangible form but only in an abstract form. Therefore the learning sequence is designed using the learning approach of Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) to answer the phenomena that occur in the process of learning mathematics. The results showed that after the PMRI learning model was applied, students felt interested and could increase mathematical knowledge and could also increase student activity in conveying ideas or ideas. For example, students dare to interact and negotiate between students and students and between students and teachers during the learning process. Besides this PMRI learning approach can also reduce the level of student abstractness in solving mathematical problems. Things like this do not happen in learning done by mathematics teachers before.
